² Each of us should please his neighbor for the good purpose of building him up. ³ For even Christ did not please himself, but as it is written: “The insults of those who are insulting you fell on me.”^[a]

⁴ Indeed, whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that, through patient endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we would have hope.
